Book Review: Great Leaders Grow

Ordinary: Read a book for professional development (I do this often) Extraordinary: Reading a book that enables you to be a more confident mentor to others and gives you specific tools and suggestions to pass along (and some for yourself, too!).  The book Great Leaders Grow is a quick read. No big words, and no big, new ideas. However, it's just SO simple it's lovely. It tells of a young man, Blake, having recently lost his father, finding his first job, and being mentored by one of his fathers friends (Debbie). His relationship with his father seems to grow deeper through this process as he discovers what his father meant when he said his last words to his son "you can be a leader". Blake chews on these words for weeks, trying to understand why his dad would say this. What did he mean? Could he really be a leader?Did he even want to? The Covid Pandemic- Our 2020 Update

 It's 2020, and you know what that means. It's the year of the global COVID pandemic.  Thank goodness it's December 14th so the year is almost over. That's very encouraging to us.  Right now, we still don't have a vaccine. The covid virus is air born, and 10 times more deadly than the flu. It's like a super flu. Pretty scary stuff.  Kids don't seem to be hurt very much by it. The elderly are extreemly suseptible. It gets worse with age. Lots of nurses and doctors have gotten it and have gotten very ill. Some have died.  Those with more pre-existing conditions tend to do worse.  It all started in about March when the virus came from China to the US. It may have been earlier; maybe February. Do you think stress is good for you, or bad for you? Does thinking about stress, stress you out? Hang with me. There's an awesome TED talk video below about stress that will totally relax and excite you. But first- what is stress? Stress is a mentally or emotionally disruptive or upsetting condition occurring in response to adverse external influences and capable of affecting physical health usually characterized by increased heart rate, a rise in blood pressure, muscular tension, irritability, and depression.  In our fast paced world, full of changes and advancements, stress is here to stay. We need to understand the psychological stress response and how to make it our friend.
